Start an Orion Township Search
There is no single official roll of every Orion Township household. The useful record path depends on the question. An address usually starts with the township tax and building search or the county parcel map. A recorded owner or a past transfer is found in Oakland County land records. A person-specific question may need a court register, a voter status check, a genealogy index, or a dated local-history source. Each source describes a different relationship, and none should be treated as a complete account of who is currently in a home.
Keep the record date and the field name. A parcel owner is not always an occupant. A mailing address can be where notices go, not the property itself. A directory entry tells what was printed for one year. These distinctions make an Orion Township residents directory search more reliable and keep an old record from being presented as a current fact.
- Begin with the street address or full name and identify whether the question concerns a parcel, a historical household, a court case, or a vital record.
- Use Orion Township BS&A or the county parcel map to preserve the situs address, PIN or KeyPIN, legal description, and tax year.
- Check Oakland County Super Index for the recorded instrument and retain the document number, names, recording date, and legal description.
- Use Michigan Voter Information Center only for an individual status search, or follow the Bureau of Elections process for a lawful Qualified Voter File request.
- When the record is historical or not online, move to Orion Library, the county archives, a court counter, or an existing-record request.
Orion Township Records Custodians
Orion Township is a charter township in Oakland County. The Township Clerk is the municipal records custodian, while Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds divisions keep the county land, vital, legal-record, and probate paths. The Village of Lake Orion is a separate jurisdiction even when a source uses Lake Orion as the postal city. Start with the office that created the record, then use its official portal or counter rather than assuming a township office holds every county file.

Township Hall lists general hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but department hours should be verified before a visit. The county vital desk, courts, and archive services have their own schedules and request rules.
Search Orion Township Parcels First
The township-facing BS&A Online landing page offers Address, Name, and Parcel Number search choices for tax, utility, building, and permit-related routes. Oakland County’s Property Gateway adds the map and report layer. It accepts at least five characters, partial street strings, percent-sign wildcards, partial PINs, and comma-separated PINs. The parcel map is a locating tool, not a legal survey.
The county GIS system describes KeyPIN as the link from parcel geometry to land records. Retain it with the situs address and legal description. The mailing field should remain separate because it may point to a post-office box, business, or another home. The fuller address-by-address process belongs on the Orion Township street directory page.
| Portal field | Entry form | What it helps locate |
|---|---|---|
| BS&A Address | Search choice | Township tax, utility, permit, or building record lead |
| BS&A Name | Search choice | Owner, person, or business lead |
| BS&A Parcel Number | Search choice | Stable municipal parcel route |
| Property Address | At least five characters; partial or wildcard text | County map, parcel result, and reports |
| PIN | Full or partial number; dashes optional | Parcel focus and KeyPIN connection |
The Orion Township BS&A search landing page displays the municipal address, name, and parcel choices.

Those choices are the starting points for a parcel record. The detail screen and its historical coverage must be checked live, because the captured landing page did not expose each result field.
Keep Orion Township Labels Separate
Lake Orion can be a postal city, a community name, or the incorporated Village of Lake Orion. It is not a substitute for the municipal jurisdiction field. An Orion Township address can use a Lake Orion mailing label, and the township’s official mailing address uses ZIP code 48360 while the library uses 48362. Check the parcel or township record before treating either postal phrase as a government boundary.
Local-history searching benefits from both names. Mahopac, Bald Mountain, Indianwood, Keatington, Paint Creek, Long Lake, Joslyn Road, Orion Review, Oakhill Cemetery, and Pine Grove are useful search terms when paired with a year and a record type. A subdivision or lake name can identify the right collection, but it does not establish a person’s address or membership in an association.
Note: Preserve the postal city exactly as a source prints it, then record municipal jurisdiction as a separate field after checking the parcel map or township record.
Follow Orion Township Deed Records
Oakland County Super Index is the county’s public land-record index. The simple “Search anything” box can accept a name, street address, PIN, or recording information. Search and indexed data are free. A guest pays to view or download an image, while subscription users have account charges. For most land documents, public copies date to January 1, 1964. Subdivision plat maps are the exception and older tract or grantor-grantee work may require the office or historical index.
A result can be sorted, filtered, searched by keyword within returned rows, and opened to show indexed data with a thumbnail. Retain the document number before paying for an image. The document record, recording date, legal description, grantor, and grantee provide a stronger historical trail than a broad name match. A grantor is the person transferring an interest; a grantee is the person receiving it.
| Index | Searchable record data, not the full scanned document. |
|---|---|
| Parcel | A mapped unit of land tied to a PIN or KeyPIN. |
| Criss-cross directory | An address-ordered directory that can lead from a house number to a dated household entry. |
| Legal description | The lot, block, subdivision, or survey language that connects a deed to land. |
Free indexed search and paid images are a useful division: use the index to test the name, date, and parcel connection first, then order only the document needed for confirmation.
Use Orion Township Voter Records Carefully
The Michigan Voter Information Center is a personal status service, not a public street-by-street roster. Its name mode uses first name, last name, birth month, birth year, and ZIP. A license mode and address mode are also offered. Results can include registration status, polling place, sample ballot, early-voting information, and absentee-ballot tracking when applicable.
Michigan voter-registration records are public under MCL 168.509gg, subject to important exclusions. Driver-license or state-ID numbers, month and day of birth, phone, email, signatures, and registration-declination data are not public fields. A Qualified Voter File request to the Bureau of Elections can be scoped by state, county, jurisdiction, district, or precinct, but it uses a separate request form and delivery rules. An MVIC no-match does not prove that someone has never lived in Orion Township.
Current Orion Township Directory Sources
Current sources answer narrow questions. The property roll can identify a recorded owner and parcel context. The deed index identifies parties to a transfer. A voter service verifies the status of an identified voter. Court indexes name parties and cases, while township staff pages identify public officials rather than private households. Association pages are community inventories, not member rolls.
| Record source | Useful field | Custodian | Access path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parcel and tax record | Situs, owner or landowner field, PIN, assessment context | Orion Township and Oakland County | BS&A and Property Gateway |
| Recorded land index | Parties, instrument type, date, document reference | Oakland Register of Deeds | Super Index and county counter |
| Voter information | Individual status and lawful public QVF fields | Michigan elections offices | MVIC or Bureau request |
| Court register | Party, court, case number, date, and events | 52-3, Oakland courts, and Michigan courts | MiCOURT, Court Explorer, or counter |
| Association inventory | Community or subdivision name and contact route | Orion Township | Township association page |
For one identified person, compare two independent anchors such as name plus parcel, date, court number, middle initial, or business filing. The Orion Township resident lookup workflow keeps owner, voter, party, and historical-directory fields distinct.
Read Orion Township Historical Directories
Orion Library’s History and Genealogy resources connect the Orion History Archive, digitized Orion Review newspapers, yearbooks, obituaries, historic photographs, Michigan Memories, MyHeritage Library Edition, and the Orion Historical Society. The library reports remote Oakland Press full-text access for 2004 to current. These dated items are useful for family history and a past address trail, but a historical entry should never be used as a claim about the current household.
The Library of Michigan supplies the broader directory shelf. Its guide describes Polk surname and street entries and Bresser criss-cross books, which may include a head of household, telephone number, owner or renter mark, first year at an address, and relocation notation. Exact Orion volume years were not established in the public capture, so ask library staff for the edition, call number, and access conditions. The historical shelf is explored in depth in the Orion Township directory book.
Request Orion Township Records Directly
When a township-created record is not online, the Orion Township Clerk or designee coordinates requests under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, 1976 PA 442, MCL 15.231 through 15.246. Orion procedures allow the JustFOIA portal, email, fax, mail, an in-person request, other writing, or a verbal request. Describe the existing record well enough for staff to locate it and state whether inspection, paper copy, electronic delivery, or non-paper media is wanted.
The township generally responds within five business days and may use one extension of up to ten business days. It can grant, deny, partially grant, or point to material already online. Courts, vital records, and voter information have their own statutes and rules, so FOIA does not override a protected court file or a recent birth-record restriction. For older material, use the archive and library route alongside a focused records request.
Orion Township’s public-record request portal provides the electronic submission route.

A parcel number, document number, case number, or date range makes a request more workable than asking an office to create a new list of people.
Check Orion Township Court Paths
The 52nd District Court, 3rd Division in Rochester Hills serves Orion Township and the Village of Lake Orion for its district jurisdiction. MiCOURT Case Search can use a participant name or case number and may be narrowed by court or case type. It is an informational service rather than the official file. Oakland Circuit and Probate matters use Court Explorer and the Clerk Legal Records or Probate counter.
A docket is a case activity record. It is not a conclusion about a person, and a no-result is not proof that no record exists. Protected case types, sealed material, and court-specific date limits can affect what appears online. Ask the right court for a record identifier, copy, terminal access, or certified copy. Do not use automated extraction or try to bypass the portal’s access controls.
Use Orion Township Safety Sources
Official custody and registry services are narrow public-safety records, not general person directories. The Michigan State Police registry search supports name or registration-number searching and address, city, county, ZIP, or radius-based map modes. MDOC OTIS covers current prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people discharged within three years of supervision discharge. It excludes county-jail prisoners, unsentenced people, protected records, and people beyond that period.
Michigan’s public registry search shows the official query interface for the separate registry process.

Use the state registry only for its stated purpose and date stamp. It cannot establish a complete history or substitute for a court record.
Michigan OTIS links to the state corrections search and explains its coverage limits.

For a current Oakland County jail question, use the Sheriff’s inmate-information route and confirm charge or bond questions with the responsible court, because the county warns that locator data may be up to 72 hours old.
Respect Orion Township Privacy Limits
Michigan’s Address Confidentiality Program, created by 2020 PA 301, gives qualifying people a designated address, mail forwarding, and corrected state identification. Voter records also have excluded fields, and motor-vehicle information is subject to separate privacy rules. Public access to one record does not permit a new compilation of sensitive details or a claim that an address is safe to republish.
Personal, lawful research only. Use Orion Township records for family history, estate questions, civic transparency, or property curiosity, never to target, watch, harass, or expose a person.
Correct an inaccurate record through its original custodian. A township request, purchased deed image, court terminal, or voter-file access may have handling rules that differ from an ordinary web search. Keep sources and dates private when they identify a sensitive person.
Account for Orion Township Record Gaps
Orion historical sources report that township records from 1835 through 1859 were destroyed by fire. That loss changes the research method. Deeds, newspaper notices, church and cemetery material, probate books, historical directories, and neighboring archival collections may be the surviving substitutes. It does not mean an older family or property has no trail.
The Library of Congress Lake Orion Sanborn item supplies five public-domain sheets dated from April 1934 through March 1943. It can help place a building or street in historical context, but it is not a current parcel map and cannot show a current owner. For a missing directory year, compare the nearest dated library source with county tax rolls, deed records, newspaper notices, and the legal description.
Note: Orion Township sources do not establish a verified modern street-renumbering crosswalk, so historical addresses need a deed, plat, map, directory, or township confirmation.
